The U15s put on a superb performance before narrowly losing by 2 points to the much-feted Castleknock in the A Championship final at Parnell Park on Sunday November 12th.
This Castleknock team have lost only once in the last four seasons of League football – to Ballyboden in 2014. Not a single defeat since and they beat John’s by a big margin in the Dublin Feile final last season and went on to be crowned national champions. But John’s, under the guidance of Darren Chambers, Rodney Joyce, Colm O’Donnell and Aidan Field have been closing the gap and they had the large contingent of Ballinteer supporters on the edges of their seats for the 60 minutes.
Castleknock scored a goal and a point early on but, playing with the wind, there was no panic from our lads who worked the ball around the pitch brilliantly to score eight points without reply. At the break it was John’s 0-9 Castleknock 1-2. One of the most dominant juvenile teams anyone can remember were being squeezed by the boys in orange.
With the wind, the favourites came out strongly, rattling off 1-3 without reply to go two ahead. Some heads in the crowd dropped briefly but not on the pitch and when Ronan Cullen played a superb pass to Liam Fenton who took one bounce before firing past the ‘Knock keeper, it was level again (John’s 1-11 Castleknock 3-5). Another point put John’s ahead and an ‘A’ Championship victory looked possible. Sadly for us, Castleknock scored the last three points to win 3-8 to 1-12 but this John’s team did the club proud and played some great football. Several mentors from some of our younger age groups were in attendance and were hugely impressed with the team’s display which set a standard for those coming behind to aspire to.
Well done to the entire U15 squad and coaches. Go get ’em next season.
