Ballinteer and Lucan battle to a draw

Our Senior hurlers were in Championship action on Thursday evening in O’Toole Park against Lucan Sarsfields in their first group game of the Championship. The game was highly anticipated and certainly lived up to all expectations, with one neutral describing it as the "best club game I have seen in years".
Both teams got out of the blocks well getting early scores to settle the nerves with Sean Corcoran pointing for Ballinteer. Gavin O’Brien then finished into the back of the net after a smashing run by Joey Maher to give Ballinteer an early three point lead. Lucan got back into it though, with 2 points of there own before the teams traded two points each – Aodhan Clabby with two frees for St. Johns. Lucan then got a penalty which they duely dispatched, to go two points in front. Ballinteer however, hit the next three points – Fionan and Aodhan Clabby free’s sandwiching a Ciarán Lane point. Glenn Whelan and Aodhan Clabby added another two points, while Lucan pegged one back to make it 1-08 to 1-06 at half-time to Ballinteer.

The second half started with two more points for each team followed by another two for Lucan which levelled things up at 1-10 a piece. The teams just could not be seperated and another three points each had the level for the seventh time in the match. Then Frank O’Donghue, Aodhan Clabby and Donal Gormley with two points had Ballinteer leading by three points in injury time until Lucan buried a ball into the back of the net to level things up. The drama didn’t stop there though, as Lucan won the resulting puck out and hit a point straight away that would surely seal a win for the Westsiders. However, with the last puck of the game, Aodhan Clabby lined up a free to pull Ballinteer back level as the full time whistle was blown. The final score was 1-18 to 2-15.
