The Senior 2 camogie team started off their league campaign with a well ground out win in Marlay park on Tuesday evening.Their opponents were the newly promoted Faughs and after a fantastic season last year and a long break from competitive action the girls were raring to go and looking to get some points on the board. They played down the hill in the first half and scores were hard to come by. Points from Aoife Kelly, Louise O’Shea and Maria Rooney meant the girls went in at the break 5 points to 4 to the good.
They knew what was needed in the second half and they had to dig deep to hang in. Faughs proved they were not coming up to senior 2 merely to make up the numbers and kept within a point or two of the Ballinteer girls throughout making for a very competitive game. Points from Grace O’Shea and Fiona Hayes increased the tally. The defense were kept on their toes but eventually the experience of the county champions held firm and they won out with a scoreline of 0.11 to 0.8.
It was a case of deja vu on Thursday evening as Faughs were again the opponents for the newly promoted senior 5 camogie girls out in Templeogue. It was a Senior 5 debut for both teams as we had moved up from playing at senior 7 due some league restructuring and Faughs had won out the Senior 6 league last year. It was a tight first half played in awful conditions. The Ballinteer girls showed good resilience and recovered well from any early Faughs goal to go in 0.3 to 1.0 at the break with scores from Caroline Kenny, Siobhra Andrews and Maria Rooney.
In the second half the Ballinteer girls began to pull away. Goals from Emma Lane, Emma Johnson and Asha Heibe put the girls on top. Points from Roisin Nic Uilleagoid and Brona Fagan and a last minute free which ended up in the back of the net from Caroline Kenny meant that the girls finished strong with a final scoreline of 4.5 to 1.2.
A great start to the league campaign for both camogie teams.
Next up has the Senior 2 girls away to St Vincents on Tuesday 12th April and the Senior 5 girls at home to Cuala on Thurs 14th April. All support welcome!
