Heartbreak for Ballinteer was to ultimately follow the early joy of leading by 1-2 to no score at half time. After recording the first point of the second half into the wind the Ballinteer faithful who had made the trek to Swords for this Dublin Division 1 Féile Peile Final were starting to dream of further representative action for these wonderful girls who have done so much to make their Club and families proud.
The wind was a huge factor in the match and proved almost as much of a challenge for those playing with it as it was for those playing into it. While the wind was an asset for defenders playing with it at their backs the same wind too often drove the passes into the forward line long and over the end-line. The big question on everyone’s mind was “would the score be enough of an advantage to Ballinteer at the turn” ? Slowly the girls of Foxrock Cabinteely clawed their back into the game and it was only in the last minutes of normal time that the most cruel ball dropped just under the crossbar above the hands of the Ballinteer keeper to level matters on the scoreboard and bring this final to extra time.
It was Foxrock Cabinteely who continued to play with the wind in the first 10 minutes extra time and, again, it was the lobbed ball dropping under the crossbar, to the despair of the Ballinteer keeper who was always going to be at a disadvantage in a full size goal, that separated the two teams at the final whistle. Foxrock Cabinteely had an advantage of 1-1 as Ballinteer set about overhauling their lead but try as they might, and despite a terrific effort at the death which brought a save from the Foxrock Cabinteely keeper, we could only manage 0-1 in the final 10 minutes which left Foxrock Cabinteely celebrating and Ballinteer disappointed.
Congratulations to both teams for their magnificent performance in very difficult conditions and thanks to Fingallians for hosting the finals.
