Great Weekend for Adult Hurlers

It was a fantastic weekend for our Adult Hurlers as both our Seniors and Intermediates progressed into their respective championships.

First up on Sunday morning our Intermediates took on Liffey Gaels in the semi final of the Junior B Championship. After a difficult opening St Johns found themselves 6 points down and down to 14 men but a goal from Colm Gilligan just before half time meant we went in just 3 points at half time having played against a strong breeze.

The second half was a hard fought affair and the free taking of Oisin Power in difficult conditions was a highlight. A goal from Power midway through the half put St Johns in front and great points from Cian Dolan and Colm Gilligan meant we were 6 points up entering the closing stages. A goal for Liffey Gaels put the pressure back on but excellent defending from Thomas Hayes and Josh Hogan among others saw St Johns prevail by 3 points to set up a final meeting with Cuala.

Later in the day at Parnell Park our senior hurlers took on Na Fianna in the club’s first ever Senior Hurling Championship match. The opening stages were tight with the breeze and greasy conditions making hurling difficult. Joe Maher kept the scoreboard ticking over with some well taken frees and he also scored a fantastic point from play from way out on the sideline. Two of our four minors in action, Aodhan Clabby and Donal Gormley, both chipped in with excellent scores before half time to leave 4 points in it at the break in St Johns’ favour.

The lads continued to assert their authority in the second half with the foundations being laid in defence with solid performances from Ronan Collins and Cormac O’Brien in particular. Joe Maher got the first of two goals with 10 minutes remaining to seal the win and in the closing stages he put the finishing touch to an outstanding team goal which crowned a memorable victory and a memorable day for hurling in the club. The prize for this victory is a quarter final tie with reigning champions Ballyboden St Endas.

Details of both fixtures will be posted on the website in advance of the games.
