The Jun A hurlers extended their winning run on a sunny Tuesday evening away to a robust Kevin’s team in sunny Dolphins Barn in the Jun A Championship. With a selection of players missing through holidays, J1’s, injuries, weddings, expectant dads and work commitments, the management team of Ken Aherne and Dermot Quinn had to dig deep into the vaults of BSJ to field a team. And what a selection of gems they came up with!!
Playing with the breeze in the first half BSJ attacked their more experienced opponents with a combative nature that completely unhinged and unsettled Kevin’s. Hunting down every ball as if their lives depended on it the mixture of experience and raw youth was blending very well.
The introduction of Paddy O Reilly into the full back line assisted by the returning Colm O’Rian after a one year absence worked beautifully assisted by Conor Hanrahan and the Smith brothers, Sean in goal and Eoin at corner back.
BSJ controlled the first half racking up points from play by Eoin Coffey and Danny Mc Carthy. Coffey was deadly with his free taking and BSJ went into the break with a 6 pt lead 0-8 – 0-2.
Playing into a strong breeze and the sun into their faces the BSJ team kept the pressure on the Kevin’s boys throughout. Josh Hogan, Ciaran Brennan, Danny Quinn and Brian Mannion were dogged in all Ariel and ground battles ensuring that their opponents never got their hand on any clean ball. Jack O’Donovan, Shane Corlay and Cormac Fenton offered an outlet in the forward line ensuring that the Kevin’s defensive line had to be on the alert constantly.
To their credit Kevin’s never gave up and rallied midway through the second half to reduce the deficit to 2pts. This was when BSJ showed their composure, regrouped and responded with points from Quinn, Coffey and an excellent long range effort from Mc Carthy. The stylish and elegant Colm Morrissey scored a fantastic goal after fielding a brilliant ball and with a quick swivel and short backswing unleashed a thunderous shot that hit the net before the keeper or his defence realised what had happened.
Changes were made as oxygen levels were running low on the pitch. The introduction of minor players Eoin Fitzpatrick ( Morrissey), Padraig O Hehir ( Fenton) and Sean Casserly ( Corlay) ensured that the BSJ boys held good until the final whistle. Final score BSJ 1-11 Kevins 0-8.
