On paper Ballinteer had a daunting introduction to Division 1 Minor hurling on Sunday, drawn away to Na Fianna, county championship winners for the last four winners. The BSJ boys were determined to give a good account of themselves and what followed was nothing short of a classic.
Hard fought in the first half there was nothing more than a puck a ball between the two sides, Na Fianna leading at the break 1-6 0-7, the goal delivered through a penalty.
St Johns dominated the 3rd quarter opening up a small lead with the aid of a goal from Jack Kelly. However they were rocked by the concession of a soft goal which led to a period of Na Fianna domination. Back came BSJ with a goal by Tom Ahearne and appeared to be heading for victory until the concession of two goals towards the end of the game looked to have won the game for the Mobhi Road men.
However the Ballinteer lads never wilted and with the game in injury time Tom Ahearne scored direct from a free to draw level and in the following minute Seamus Fenton won a foot race to a breaking ball to force the ball home for a fourth goal!
BSJ put their bodies on the line for the remaining minutes to run out 4.14 to 4.11 winners!!
Next game Sunday March 4th v St Vincents in Marlay
