History was made when our Jun A team won the playoff against St. Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh, thus gaining promotion to AFL 4 and Intermediate status for the first time. We gained promotion to AFL 5 fifteen years ago. The game was played on a beautifully prepared pitch in sunny conditions in the Phoenix Pk. We started in a strong fashion with strong running from the backline by Joe Sweeney , Naoise Cronin and inspirational captain Ciaran McCabe.
We opened up their defensive system and kicked some outstanding scores. Mid-way through the first half Colm O’Donnell cut in from the wing and finished off to the net. With scores from numerous players, Shane McCann added to our advantage with 2 excellent points. The backs ably assisted by the industrious Paul Farrell, limited Plunketts to 3 points in the first half. At the half time break we went in 1-9 to 0-3 up. With the aid of the breeze for the 2nd half, Plunketts upped their game immediately, and scored 3 points on the trot . They brought on strong subs and with long balls into their full forward line, they got 2 goals with one being from a penalty. We only scored 2 points in that time, so the margin was down to a minimum. We dug really deep in the last 5 nerve racking minutes to achieve a fully deserved win.
On a great day for the club every player played their part not only today but throughout the long and hard season . However it was unanimous among Management that young Naoise Crionin takes the MOTM award.
