Our Senior footballers had an impressive 10 point victory over St Marks on Saturday in O’Toole Park. A good crowd turned up for on Saturday afternoon and they were treated to a great display by St Johns.
The first few minutes were quite tense with both teams matching each and the game was level at 4 points each after 10 minutes. However, then Ballinteer started to relax and became assertive with Johnny McNally kicking over some great frees and Sean Reilly pitching in with a few scores of his own.
The scoreline read 10 points to 4 when St Marks were nearly handed a lifeline. They came through one on one with the St Johns goalkeeper and bundled the ball over the line after the initial effort was saved, however the referee called a square ball and Ballinteer moved on.
They went in at half-time leading 13 points to 4 and very much in the driving seat. The second half started as the first half ended with St Johns having most of the ball and then 5 minutes in, Shane McCann put the game to bed as a contest with a wonderfully executed goal on his left foot, from a very tight angle. This put Ballinteer 12 points up.
St Marks then had a small purple patch and scored 1-01 in quick succession to bring it back to 8 points but St Johns tokk control once more and Sean Reilly and Co, kept the scoreboard ticking, finsihing the game 1-17 to 1-07.
The second round now takes place next Saturday at 4:30pm in O’Toole Park against Templeougue.
