Social Committee 2016 report

The social committee opened up the year with a night of festive flora. This involved the ladies of the club being given a demonstration of Christmas flower arranging while sipping a glass of mulled wine. The expert arrangements by Maria Watchorn and Karen Russell gave us all food for thought and we chatted into the night. In January we decided to try out a new idea and fiver Friday was born. We invited our lady members along to exchange their unwanted clothes or Christmas presents for a fiver. We had great fun trying on each other’s clothes and one woman’s poison quickly became another’s meat! On Valentine’s night we hosted our second Mr and Mrs quiz. The bar was beautifully decorated for the event (thanks to Aileen Grady) and a number of couples (conventional and otherwise ) competed for some romantic prizes. Our aim has always been to increase footfall in the clubhouse and to extend a warm welcome to our lady members. These events certainly fulfilled that.

Our next event was an ambitious one. We wanted to follow our very successful dinner dance of 2015 but host it in the clubhouse this year. We aimed high, a 3 course meal, and a glass of wine in a transformed function room all for 25 euro. This was never going to be easy particularly when you add the fact that the we had the club’s 1916 commemoration the same weekend but I hope those of you who were there will agree that we pulled it off.The room was transformed with the expert help of Catherine Sherry and Louise Minogue. I heard one person comment that it was at the standard of a very fancy wedding. Guests were seated and served a cool glass of wine and then enjoyed a meal in the company of friends young and not so young. Ken thanked the committee and the caterer and gave a special mention to Aileen Grady who had worked tirelessly to ensure the high standard we all enjoyed on the night. The DJ played till the small hours and the craic flowed!

We had 2 new members join the committee this year, Rachel Ahern and Marita Pigott (welcome girls), they joined Aileen Grady , Elaine Dolan, Karen Casserly, Paula Colleran, Sandra Seoige,Yvonne Joye, myself and our co chairs, Siobhan Mooney and Sue Mc Donagh in helping to build the social side of our club. We have lots of events in the Diary for next year including our festive flower arranging on 11th December, a hair and make up night on February 3rd and another swop night on March 24th. We are always looking for new members so if you want to have fun while organising fun for others get in touch!
